WORK free screening

WORK documents the recording process of the first in a trilogy of albums by the Buffalo-based new music ensemble, Wooden Cities, grappling with issues of labor, environmental justice, and workplace democracy. The 56-minute documentary features footage captured during the ensemble's summer 2018 recording sessions, as well as Mehrvarz's interviews with the musicians and ensemble director Brendan Fitzgerald. The film also includes animations of two sections of the recorded premiere of Frederic Rzewski's The Price of Oil, made using stop motion techniques and consisting of over 80,000 frames. Also featured are Cornelius Cardew's Red Flag Prelude—an elegiac commemoration of the martyrs of the early labor movement—and Wooden Cities' Chain Gang, a dynamic, structured improvisation.

WORK release

To celebrate the release of their debut album, WORK, Wooden Cities is playing selections from their past and present, including John Zorn's seminal work, Cobra, the first piece in the group's expansive repertoire.

The first half of the concert will feature pieces that draw on Wooden Cities' many forms. Gertrude Stein and Marina Blitshteyn's poetry speaks through new arrangements from ensemble members Evan Courtin and Ethan Hayden. Matt Wellins' Dead Room turns pressed paper and cardboard into sound and action through manipulation and destruction all while closely amplified with contact microphones. Cornelius Cardew's Red Flag Prelude, carefully re-orchestrated for chamber ensemble, observes the human cost of mining, and Mauricio Kagel's Con Voce showcases the ensemble's penchant for theatrics - something to only be experienced live.

Add John Zorn's explosive game piece Cobra with a who's-who list of top Western New York players, and the night is not to be missed!

A More-er Very-er Wooden Christmas

Wooden Cities is at it again for a fourth time with its silent Christmas film live-scoring extravaganza! Travel to the North Pole, meet the many forms of the big jolly guy, and see how christmas crackers are made. It's "The More-er Very-est Wooden Christmas" Ever!

The eight shorts, all filmed between 1898 and 1925, map the full range of the silent film era, and include works by acclaimed directors Edwin S. Porter and D.W. Griffith. Wooden Cities will perform live music to accompany these films, providing soundtracks that by turns augment, mimic, comment on, or undercut the action onscreen.

In addition, poet/visual artist Robin Lee Jordan will present Santa ClaWs, a holiday-themed horror/comedy visual found-poem presented as a series of satirical vignettes remixing the kitten-filled, family friendly 2014 holiday film, Santa Claws. Jordan will then team up with sonic artist Adam Drury to present a bleak re-telling of Dr. Seuss' optimistic holiday classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Examples of Excess
Wooden Cities collaborates with James Currie, a well-known musicologist currently teaching at the University at Buffalo, to create a performance piece around a lecture on music, philosophy, and critical theory.

Both tragic and comic at the same time, Examples of Excess explores the excesses (emotional, political, and sexual) that haunt the fringes of our seemingly normal, day-to-day professional activities. Although the piece was not composed with any particular political agenda in mind, it is nevertheless pervaded by a sense of the extraordinary instability of the world we now inhabit and the resultant fragility of the professional roles to which we must therefore strive to conform. Its drama is a seemingly quite mundane affair in which, before an on-stage audience, an academic music historian is introduced, gives a lecture, and then answers some questions. But at every moment excessive emotions, ranging from fury and euphoria to profound despair, explode into its framework. The result is an accumulating sequence of disturbing and hilarious crises in which even the distinction between the lecturer and the music he is supposedly discussing starts to collapse. Like a kid in a candy store, the piece voraciously consumes all and any available performance gestures or clichés so that at its conclusion all that is left is the pleasures that have been gained from the excesses of the performance itself. And perhaps in the world we presently live in, that is the only conclusion to be drawn.
